Creating a Terrorist Template
Created: August 2004
This tutorial will explain how to create a custom terrorist template.
Note: I have found the editor to be stubborn when it comes to closing templates. You should always close a specific template by selecting the Cancel button. Don't close the browser window by select the "X" (in the top right corner) after you have viewed a template. There is a good chance the editor will freeze up.
Opening the Template Browser
In the editor, click the View menu, then select Show Template Browser. The browser window will appear with the Char. Template tab selected. You will see two sections, one listing the Terrorist Templates and the other listing the Hostage Templates. To create a new terrorist template, select the Edit menu, then select New Terrorist Template. A window will appear titled Character Template Editor.

Adjusting the Settings
1. Enter the file name in the Template name: field. You want to create a name for the file with no spaces in it. It would be best to have your map name some where in the file name. Examples could be: mapname_01.tpt or mapname_sniper.tpt. This will make it easier for everyone to know which map this file belongs to.
2. We need to determine the Skills of the terrorist. Unfortunately I don't know exactly how all of these Skills will affect the terrorist's behavior in the game. Until I learn them, I will leave it up to your to make an educated guess. All of these values are based on a maximum of 100 points. I do know that Rnd Variation will determine the variation of a skill using the value you entered. For example: If you set your Rnd Variation to 25 and the Assault skill to 50. The game will randomly create a skill value between 25 and 75 for that terrorist at the start of the round. This provides some variety in how good your opponent will be. You can create a template for a very specific use such as a Sniper. You would give them higher skills in the Sniper, Self Control and Observation fields. You can also create 1 template for all of your terrorists and have the skills some where in the middle value.
3. We need to determine the Personality of the terrorist. Again, I don't know exactly how these personalities will affect the terrorist's behavior in the game. Use your best educated guess. All of these values must add up to 100. For example, you can have 20 for Coward, 40 for Hardened, and 40 for Sniper. If the numbers don't add up and you try to Create your template, the editor will inform you the total combine value.
4. We need to determine how the terrorist will look to the player under Pawn chance. This will be the skin of the terrorist and how they will physically appear in the game. Click here to see what the terrorist will look like for a given pawn. From the drop down menu, select which pawn to use. Then enter a value to the right to determine the chance of using that pawn. Then select the Add button to add it to the above field. If you want to remove an entry, select it, then select the Remove button. The combine value must add up to 100%. If it doesn't, the editor will inform you of the total combine value.
5. We need to determine which Weapon the terrorist will use. There is a lot of choices that can be used. This works exactly like the Pawn chance section. The combine value must add up to 100%. If it doesn't, the editor will inform you of the total combine value.
6. We need to select which Grenade the terrorist will use. This works exactly like the Pawn chance section. You do have to have a grenade and value selected, even if it's None at 100. The combine value must add up to 100%. If it doesn't, the editor will inform you of the total combine value. It seems like a terrorist will throw a grenade first, then shoot later. If too many terrorists have a high chance of carrying a grenade, the level won't be too challenging cause you will be able to shoot them while they are throwing the grenade.
7. We are going to select the probability of a terrorist having a Flashlight or an Attachment. For the flashlight field, select 0% if the map is in the day time, select a higher number if it's set at night. In the Attachment section, these values can be kept at 0% and max out at 100% combined. Technically, a terrorist throwing a gas grenade, should have a gas mask, but this doesn't seem to be the case all the time. If you have a certain percentage of terrorists carrying gas grenades, I would set the same value in the Gas Mask field. If the map is at night, it doesn't make much sense that they would be wearing sun glasses.
8. To create the file press the Create button. A file will be created in the template folder. This file must be included with your map if the map is released. You must also assign this new template to a terrorist or group of terrorists in your map. Click here to learn how to do this, find the section titled Kits/Templates.
Notes
*You can open an existing template by double-clicking the name. You can also use the three buttons above the list of created templates instead of using the menu.
*Never adjust the values for any stock or pre-existing custom template. This could cause a version mismatch if you played the map with another person.
*View existing templates to get ideas on the Skills and Personality settings.
